The Trial of Helen: Gender and Judgment in Machinal

In Machinal, the Young Woman is trapped by social expectations and is forced to marry her boss despite a lack of love for him. Suffocated by her life, she initiates an affair which later leads to the murder of her husband which she consequently pays for with a trial and execution highlighting how society punishes those who don't conform to standard norms.

The play shows modern society as rigid and machine-like through which people do what they are told without ever questioning why. In the Young Woman's case, she is bound by work, marriage and social expectations, all of which are repetitive and mechanical, showing how individuals lack self autonomy by operating inside of a system.

Patriarchal pressure is emphasized as well through the pressure to marry and obey traditional gender roles. She is forced to marry for security rather than desire which reinforces her lack of enthusiasm for marriage in favor of preserving her sense of self.
